Federal government launches $100 million steel shipping rebate

The federal government is introducing a $100 million rebate program to reduce transportation costs for Canadian steel moving between provinces and territories. Transport Canada says the measure will help producers reach more domestic customers and strengthen supply chains.

The Commodities Sectoral Support Program will rebate 50 per cent of eligible rail or marine transportation costs for Canadian steel shipped interprovincially. The program began August 10 and will run for up to one year or until funding is fully claimed.

Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon said the rebate will help Canadian steel compete in a changing market.

“Global trade is changing quickly, and Canada must adapt. Canadians are looking for more opportunities to buy Canadian products, including Canadian steel. Through this rebate, we’re helping businesses strengthen their presence in the domestic market,” he said.

Shippers can apply through Transport Canada’s rebate portal. Eligible shipments include Canadian-origin steel moved by interprovincial rail carload or non-containerized marine cargo.
